Each purse is handmade from ethically sourced Nguni cowhides. The Nguni are a breed of cattle that is endemic to Southern Africa. The cattle are still tended to by herdboys in open grasslands and prized for their value. Their natural evolution has made them a hardy cattle, able to withstand tough conditions. Despite how tough these animals are, they make for good beef and their stunning and unique hides are a biproduct of the beef industry. Since no two hides are the same and because Herd of Ubuntu products are hand made, each item will be slightly different with their own attributes and characteristics.

A portion of all online sales goes towards projects that help protect African rhinos from the threat of poaching. In the past HOU has helped sponsor a rhino dehorning of a black rhino and tracking collar replacement of a white rhino at Phinda Private Game Reserve. Currently donations are being made to Stop Rhino Poaching, an organisation that supports on the ground efforts through training and equipment supplies.
